Published on August 31, 2019, Ethic's song 'Figa' was making waves in the music scene, attracting the attention of celebrated Jamaican dance hall singer Konshens.
However, the song's success was short-lived as it mysteriously disappeared from YouTube earlier this month.
The reason behind the song's disappearance has now been revealed, with many Kenyans accusing Ethic of plagiarism.
It appears that the beats to 'Figa' were ripped off from a song titled 'Cono', sung by Dutch rapper Jhorrmountain in collaboration with Puri and Adje.
Released in December 9, 2017, 'Cono' has over 25 million views on YouTube, while 'Figa' had accelerated to over one million views in just two months.
Many Kenyans have taken to social media to express their disappointment and frustration, with some even trolling Ethic.
‘I’ve heard this beat before but I can’t figa it out,’ said Newton Muthuri.
‘Kama uko hapa after ethic pull down. Piga like kakisonga,’ stated two minute movie scene.
‘Gonga like if you here after the figa ban,’ wrote Keith Kipkoech.
‘Kenyan producers are trash wallai,’ commented Watson Gitau.
‘Naskiza hii song but the words in my head ni “mbulu luku washa kindukulu”,’ said Ed K.
It remains to be seen how Ethic will respond to these allegations and whether they will be able to recover from this setback.
