On August 14, 2019, authorities in Tanzania's largest city, Dar es Salaam, announced a plan to publish the names of all married men in the area to protect single women.
The move, announced by regional commissioner Paul Makonda, aims to prevent married men from deceiving single women with promises of marriage.
According to Makonda, many women in the region have been deceived by men who promised to marry them but later dumped them, leaving them with emotional bruises.
"I have received a lot of complaints from young women. Many women from Dar es Salaam region have been deceived many times, and they have had enough," Makonda said.
The plan involves publishing the names of all married men on a website operated by a State agency, allowing single women to verify the marital status of their partners before committing to a relationship.
Makonda cited the country's laws, which allow authorities to protect women who have been deceived by men with promises of marriage.
