On July 10, 2019, police were contemplating charging blogger and digital strategist Dennis Itumbi with treason over an alleged assassination plot on Deputy President William Ruto.
Itumbi had been held in custody for five days as police conducted deeper investigations into the matter.
According to sources at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), they had gathered enough evidence to nail Itumbi, who was accused of falsifying documents.
Itumbi had claimed to have tangible evidence of a meeting at La Mada hotel where cabinet secretaries from the central region had schemed to eliminate the Deputy President.
However, a combined team of the FBI and DCI found the letter circulated as fake and tracked it down to Itumbi as the author.
Police sources revealed that by last evening, it had been decided that Itumbi should be charged with making a false document, with some pushing for a higher charge of treason for imagining the death of a sitting deputy president.
