Manchester United have made a major splash in the transfer market by signing Harry Maguire for a record-breaking £80 million (Sh10 billion).

The deal eclipses the £75 million (Sh9.3 billion) Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018, making Maguire the most expensive centre-back of all time.

Maguire was left out of Leicester's squad to take on Atalanta at the King Power Stadium on Friday night, allowing the transfer to be completed.

The England international will become Manchester United's third signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Swansea and Crystal Palace respectively.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was instrumental in securing the deal, which was finalized after an improved offer was accepted on Friday morning.

"I think we have picked the short straw," Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Sky Sports News, referencing the length of the transfer window.

Manchester United are still working on transfers for other players, including a potential deal for Paulo Dybala, which is complicated by Romelu Lukaku's future.
