On January 26, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a stern warning to those responsible for vandalizing critical development infrastructure, stating that such acts would be considered economic sabotage.
As a result, the President banned any further dealing in scrap metal until guidelines to regulate the sector have been put in place.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Energy counterpart Monica Juma will lead a meeting with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) commanders, and top KPLC and energy sector managers to address the issue.
The meeting comes in the wake of recent incidents, including the arrest of nine senior Kenya Power officials following a countrywide power outage linked to negligence and sabotage.
Two months prior, police arrested two individuals for vandalizing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line in Mtito Andei, causing a two-hour delay of a passenger train.
