Menengai Oilers are gearing up for a thrilling encounter against defending champions Homeboyz in the upcoming 2019 National Sevens Circuit, which kicks off next weekend in Kakamega.
The two sides will face off in the preliminaries after being drawn in pool A, alongside Impala Saracens and Western Bulls, who are joint hosts of the two-day tournament.
Despite being the underdogs, Oilers' head coach Gibson Weru is confident that his team can pull off an upset against the favorites, Homeboyz and Impala.
'I think this is the tournament's pool of death,' Weru said. 'They are all tough opponents, but I always like being challenged. It will depend on how we perform, especially against the defending champions, and we shall be ready for the task.'
Oilers will launch their quest against Impala in the first match of the tournament, before facing Homeboyz and Bulls.
Having won the Nakuru 10-a-side in April and the Embu Sevens last weekend, Weru believes his team has come of age in the shorter version of the game.
'All teams in our pool are Kenya Cup sides, and it will be interesting to face them,' Weru said. 'We have been preparing well, and our target will be to qualify for the Cup quarters.'
Weru has bolstered his playing unit by roping in six new players, including Kenya under-20 international Samson Were, who has joined the Nakuru outfit from Laiser Hill Academy.
