Published on July 10, 2019, a remarkable incident unfolded on a bus traveling from Kakamega to Nairobi. Passengers, who had paid between Sh800 and Sh700 for their journey, took matters into their own hands when they accused the driver of reckless driving.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver ignored the passengers' appeals to stop speeding, particularly on a steep road after Riat in Kisumu. Maurine Odari, a passenger who boarded the bus at Majengo, recalled, 'When we approached the steep road after Riat in Kisumu, I knew we were done.'
A group of passengers then confronted the driver, who stopped at Mamboleo roundabout. The passengers pushed him out of the vehicle and called the police. Harizon Wechuli, another passenger, stated, 'We had to act or perish. The driver seemed unfit to drive. We literally had to lift him from the driver's seat.'
Police arrived shortly after midnight and arrested the driver. The bus was impounded, and the passengers were left to walk to Mamboleo police station, where they waited for daybreak. The bus was later towed to the police station.
Anderson Odak, the vehicle's owner, claimed that the bus was on the road without his knowledge and that it was supposed to be parked at a yard for a buyer to view it. He stated, 'We have already arranged how passengers will be transported to Nairobi but I have to sack the entire crew.'
