Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has clarified his government's stance on Kenya's upcoming August general elections, stating that they will not take sides in the polls.
Speaking in an interview with the New Vision Television, Museveni emphasized that the nation will not endorse any political candidate, reiterating the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
"Elections in Kenya or any other African country are a matter for the people of that country. We never take sides in the internal affairs of other countries. So, we have no side in Kenya elections," Museveni stated.
The relationship between Deputy President William Ruto and Museveni has been a subject of scrutiny in the past, with some Ugandans accusing Ruto of getting involved in their politics.
Notably, Ruto was seen to be active in Museveni's campaign trail in 2015, an incident that did not sit well with many, especially the opposition.
Additionally, Ruto was hosted by Museveni at State House Kampala in 2019 for a close to three-hour meeting, and in July 2021, he was invited as a chief guest at the official stone-laying ceremony for a vaccine manufacturing plant in Uganda.
However, in August, Ruto was barred from traveling to Uganda alongside his team due to the Interior Ministry's failure to clear him.
