On Friday last week, a fire broke out in a dormitory at St. George Katheka High School in Machakos, leaving two female students with serious injuries.
The victims, a Form 1 and Form 2 student, were sleeping when the fire occurred, and eight students were subsequently arrested in a suspected arson case.
According to a medical official at Machakos Level Five Hospital, the girls were admitted with 57% burns on their legs and are currently unable to walk, but are responding well to treatment.
Following the incident, the school was closed, and Masii MCA Betty Nzisa Nzioki visited the students in hospital, condemning the incident and calling for action against the rising cases of school fires in the area.
Earlier last week, students from Machakos Boys High School were sent home after two dormitories were burnt down in separate incidents, with no students injured.
