On July 7, 2019, Joe Kadenge, an 84-year-old Kenyan football icon, passed away at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi after a long battle with stroke.
As a tribute to his legacy, the Senate has proposed renaming Nyayo National Stadium after Kadenge, a move that has been welcomed by many.
Meanwhile, Kadenge's burial is set to take place on July 20 in Soliani Village, Hamisi Sub-county, Vihiga County.
At a press conference at Kadenge's home in Mariakani Estate, South 'B', his family announced plans to hold a funds drive on July 16 to help offset some of the bills incurred by his death.
Friends and elected leaders, including ODM leader Raila Odinga and Vihiga Senator George Khaniri, have been visiting Kadenge's home to condole with the family and receive a briefing on the burial plans.
Speaking at the press conference, Odinga eulogised Kadenge as a 'great footballer' who promoted Kenyan football globally and nurtured upcoming talents.
At the Senate, lawmakers described Kadenge as a true national icon and hero whose exploits on the pitch deserved to be immortalised through the renaming of the stadium.
