On July 9, 2019, the Migori County government, under the leadership of Governor Okoth Obado, was criticized for awarding a contract to Gogni Rajope, a contractor with a history of substandard work, to tarmac the Masara-Karungu road in Nyatike.

The contract, worth millions of shillings, is the latest in a series of deals between the county government and Rajope, who has also been involved in the construction of the dilapidated Rodi Kopany-Sori Road, which connects Homa Bay and Migori counties.

Constructed less than three years ago at a cost of close to 1 billion shillings, the Rodi Kopany-Sori road has already developed gaping potholes, making it a death trap for road users.

Despite the poor state of the road, Governor Obado has continued to award Rajope contracts, raising questions about the county government's competence and the tendering process.

Residents are now demanding answers about the exact cost of tarmacking the Masara-Karungu road and how Rajope was awarded the contract, given his history of substandard work.
