On January 21, 2022, Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma expressed optimism about the ongoing reforms to reduce electricity costs in Kenya. The reforms aim to make clean, affordable, and accessible energy a reality for all Kenyans.
As part of the reforms, the government announced a 15% reduction in power tariffs on January 7, 2022. This reduction is part of a 30% tariff cut pledge made by President Uhuru Kenyatta to ease the economic burden faced by Kenyans.
According to Juma, the Ministry of Energy is developing a policy road-map that will culminate in the Energy White Paper. This document will help the country progressively realize the dream of reduced power costs.
"I want to assure all Kenyans that we are determined to see these reforms through and are focused on making clean, affordable, and accessible energy a reality for all Kenyans," Juma said.
She also noted that the engagements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have been constructive, offering valuable pointers towards making power competitive, stable, and accessible.
As part of the reforms, the government froze all pending and ongoing contracts with IPPs in October 2021 to pave the way for a review of existing agreements inked by the electricity distributor Kenya Power.
