On July 9, 2019, the family of Joe Kadenge, a renowned football legend, called on Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards legends to help them raise Ksh. 5 million for his burial.
A fundraiser has been organized for July 16 to collect funds for the funeral.
"The family invites everyone willing to join them, including all sorts of sporting federations, to join them in fundraising," said Chris Mmbwanga, the family's spokesperson, in an interview with Citizen Digital on Tuesday.
Top government officials, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, have condoled with the family following Kadenge's death.
Deputy President William Ruto pledged government support to ensure Kadenge receives a decent send-off, while Amani National Congress Party leader Musalia Mudavadi offered a helicopter to transport the body from Lee funeral home in Nairobi to Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega county, where Kadenge started his football career.
From the stadium, the convoy will proceed to Kadenge's Vihiga home.
Kadenge began his football career as an attacking midfielder for Maragoli United in 1966, before joining Abaluhya United, now renamed AFC Leopards, and went on to play for Harambee Stars for 14 remarkable years.
