On July 5, 2019, lawyer Karanja Kabage died in a car accident along the Southern Bypass near Kibera, Nairobi. The incident occurred at around 10pm as he drove towards Karen direction.
According to eyewitnesses, Kabage's vehicle veered off the road, slowed down, and appeared to be making a u-turn before hitting the pavement. The impact was not life-threatening, and his vehicle was only slightly damaged.
Despite being found talking when he was discovered on Friday night, Kabage was later pronounced dead at the Nairobi Hospital after doctors' efforts to resuscitate him proved futile.
Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai stated that upon the intervention of a taxi driver and a Good Samaritan, Kabage asked to be taken to the Nairobi Hospital, where he arrived unconscious.
As part of the investigation, police intend to interrogate Kabage's driver and other individuals who were with him before the incident. The police also aim to determine where Kabage visited hours before the accident.
It has been reported that Kabage spent his day on Friday at the first annual Mount Kenya High Level Uongozi Forum at Safari Park, where he was a panelist. He also attended Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore's memorial service at All Saints Cathedral on Thursday.
Before his death, Kabage served in various capacities in the business sector. In 2017, he vied for the Nakuru senatorial seat and later contested for the Njoro Constituency seat, but lost to Charity Kathambi.
Autopsy results have now revealed that Kabage died from a cardiac arrest, contradicting initial police reports that he suffered a heart attack.
