Published on July 9, 2019, Kenya Power has announced a significant milestone in the country's electricity connectivity. According to the latest data, an additional 440,000 electricity consumers were connected to the national grid in the period, bringing the total number of connected households to 7.1 million.
This represents a 30% increase from the previous year, marking a major step towards achieving the government's goal of universal electricity connection by 2020.
Speaking during a press conference in Naivasha, the company's acting CEO, Engineer Jared Othieno, emphasized the company's commitment to increasing its customer base by 600,000 every year.
He noted that the company is working towards meeting the government's target of universal electricity connection, with a current 7.1 million households connected to the national grid.
However, Othieno also acknowledged that the company had faced challenges with the token system in the last couple of months, which had affected customers. He assured that the issue had been addressed after harmonizing tariffs and placing customers in two groups depending on their electricity consumption.
"We had some challenges last year in the token system which has since been consolidated and the issue of delay has been sorted by our service delivery Safaricom," Othieno said.
He also highlighted the company's efforts to improve customer service, including the introduction of a new app that allows customers to track their electricity consumption.
