Published on January 14, 2022, Nairobi County's plan to spend Ksh500 million on luxurious mansions for Governor Ann Kananu and Deputy Governor has sparked controversy.
The County Government of Nairobi intends to purchase the mansions in posh estates, with the funds allocated under the annual County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) for the Financial Year 2022-2023.
However, this plan contradicts the Senate's directive that the Governor's house should not cost over Ksh45 million, and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission's (SRC) 2020 edict requiring counties to construct residential houses for their county chiefs to reduce allowances.
The National Treasury had complained that the rent expenditures for governors, deputy governors, and speakers were overwhelming the budget, and more money should be allotted to development projects.
Formerly, the Nairobi Governor was to reside in Mayor's official residence in Lavington, but the house was occupied by former County Executive Committee (CEC) member Ann Lokidor, who was kicked out in November 2018.
