On July 8, 2019, Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay was in Rubavu, Rwanda, to watch his team play in the Cecafa Kagame Cup.

During a post-match interview, Oktay was asked about reports that the club had signed Rwandan midfielder Djabel Manishimiwe.

"I don't even know the boy," Oktay replied, visibly surprised.

He then glanced at his captain, Harun Shakava, who was sitting beside him.

"I did not ask anyone to sign him because we are not looking for midfielders. I want a striker. A good one. We have lost the best striker in East Africa and we need to replace him with similar quality," Oktay added.

Earlier in the month, Gor Mahia had agreed to sell Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge to Angola's Petro Atletico for a reported Sh15 million.

Manishimiwe's reported transfer to Gor Mahia had been announced by Rwandan club Rayon Sport on social media, but the player later signed with Rwanda Patriotic Army (APR) instead.
