On July 9, 2019, Michael Wanjala Makokha was elected as the new Managing Director of Nzoia Sugar, a company struggling with a cash crisis.

The company had been under the acting leadership of Michael Kulundu, who died in March 2019 after an attack by unknown assailants.

As the new MD, Wanjala, an accountant, has vowed to revive the company, which has not paid over 900 employees their salaries for over four months, including millions of shillings in farmer's arrears.

Although the government had paid some of the farmers earlier in the year, the debt remains unpaid.

Wanjala has urged the farmers and workers to be patient, assuring them that their dues will be settled.

He also highlighted the company's advantage of owning over 10,000 hectares of land, which he believes will benefit the company compared to other sugar mills.
