Published on January 12, 2022, Governor Lee Kinyanjui announced that the county government of Nakuru will not reintroduce a ban on fishing in Lake Naivasha. The decision was made after a sharp drop in fish catch, attributed to overfishing, prevalent cold weather, and an increase in the number of illegal fishermen.
Instead of a ban, the county will embark on mass restocking in the lake. This move is in line with the recommendations of a task force formed last year to address the challenges of the lake. Governor Kinyanjui emphasized that Lake Naivasha is critical to the economy of Nakuru and banning fishing would adversely affect thousands of people who depend on it directly and indirectly.
During a groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of a local municipal park in Naivasha, Governor Kinyanjui also announced plans to upgrade Molo and Gilgil towns into municipalities. The park, which had been targeted by land grabbers, will be rehabilitated and made one of the most modern and environmentally-friendly parks in the county.
