On the eve of a planned strike, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced that it had called off the industrial action in Mombasa, effective January 11, 2022.
The decision to call off the strike was made after talks with the county health department and Mombasa governor yielded positive results, according to Dr. Nassir Shaban, KMPDU Coast branch Secretary.
Addressing the media on Monday evening, Dr. Shaban stated that the union had been pushing for the county government to address pending salary arrears, National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) deductions, and promotions for health workers.
Dr. Shaban had previously accused the county government of perennial salary delays, failure to promote 70 health consultants who had stagnated in one job group for over five years, and contracted doctors who were yet to be absorbed under permanent and pensionable terms.
Dr. Hassan Ahmed, Coast KMPDU Chairperson, also expressed frustration with the county government's handling of the situation, citing the hosting of a mega end-year party despite the ongoing salary disputes.
