Kenyan football has made significant strides in recent years, and Harambee Stars left-back Aboud Omar is a testament to this growth. Speaking to Nyakundi Report, Aboud reflected on his experience representing Kenya in the 2019 AFCON held in Egypt.
Aboud, who currently plays for Sepsi OSK in Romania, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in the tournament, which marked a return to the competition after a 15-year drought. "Representing the country in the 2019 AFCON was a great opportunity to market ourselves and the country," he said.
Despite failing to meet their target of qualifying for the last 16, Aboud and his teammates received massive support from Kenyan fans and the government. He also praised the experience of playing against top-notch players like Sadio Mane and Riyadh Mahrez, although admitting it was tough to mark them.
Aboud's career has been a remarkable journey, from playing in the Kenyan Premier League for Bandari FC and Tusker FC to being spotted by a scout during a Harambee Stars match with Morocco. He believes that with the right leadership and investment, Kenyan football will regain its high-ranking status.
Aboud's words of encouragement to young players are a reminder that hard work and discipline are key to success in football. "With proper preparation and funding, we have shown that Kenyan football can achieve great things," he added.
