On July 7, 2019, a crackdown on illicit gold mining in Vihiga County led to the arrest of four Chinese nationals.

According to police, the four individuals - Ou Haiwen, Zhang Jinyu, Jiang Hualin, and Huang Lei - were mining gold without a permit from the government.

The arrests came amidst growing concerns from local traders, who have been protesting the influx of foreigners in the markets.

Starehe MP Charles Njagua had previously been arrested for calling for the removal of all foreigners from markets in Gikomba, Kamukunji, and other areas.
