On Tuesday next week, the Senate will hold a special sitting for the first reading of the Political Parties Amendment Bill, which was passed in the National Assembly on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.
Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka has confirmed that he has received a request from the House leadership to hold a special sitting, which will be gazetted after a House Business Committee meeting on Friday, January 7, 2022.
According to Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio, the bill will be committed to the Senate's Justice, Legal and Human Rights Affairs committee, led by Nyamira Senator Okongo Omugeni, for processing.
Minority Whip Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, a member of the JLAC committee, stated that they will follow all the necessary processes, including receiving views from the public, before writing a report and committing it to the House.
The bill is a special bill and will be voted on by the 47 delegations in the Senate.
The bill was passed on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, after an acrimonious sitting in the National Assembly.
