Published on July 8, 2019, Tunisia's Nabil Karoui, a prominent presidential candidate, has been charged with money laundering, along with his brother Ghazi Karoui.
The investigation, which began in 2017, was sparked by a complaint filed by anti-corruption watchdog I-Watch, accusing Karoui of tax fraud.
According to Sofiene Sliti, spokesman for the judiciary department for financial cases, the judge decided to charge the brothers with money laundering after summoning and hearing them.
The judge also froze their assets and banned them from traveling abroad.
Karoui, who has been a fierce opponent of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, had launched an international media and advertising company, Karoui & Karoui, in 2002.
He was also an active supporter of President Beji Caid Essebsi's election in 2014 but had become a vocal critic of the prime minister.
