December 30, 2021, marked a chaotic day for motorists on the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway after a motorist was attacked by a herd of stray elephants.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 29, when the motorist was caught off guard by the elephants, which went on a rampage and trampled his vehicle.

Fortunately, the motorist survived the attack but sustained injuries and was rushed to the Naivasha sub-County hospital by well-wishers.

Witnesses claimed that the elephants destroyed property of unknown value in Lakeview and Hellsgate wards, prompting area residents to raise alarm with the Kenya Wildlife Services Institute in Lakeview ward.

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) wardens were dispatched to trail the elephants and tame the animals, which posed a threat to human life and property.

On Thursday, December 30, the wardens tracked down the elephants to a tract of land on the highway and erected a roadblock to allow the rangers to chase them away.

While rangers directed the elephants on the ground, a helicopter monitored their movement from above.

KWS established that the elephants had migrated from Narok and were en route to the Aberdares, noting that the attack by the towering animals was unusual.
