On July 8, 2019, a Kenyan Defence Forces soldier attached to Kotile Military base in Ijara Sub County suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.

The incident occurred when the soldier, who was with his colleagues at an M-Pesa shop, accidentally shot himself due to a loaded gun with an unlocked pin.

Colleagues reported that the soldier had forgotten to lock the pin, leading to the accidental discharge.

The injured soldier was rushed to Masalani Sub-County Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.

Police in Masalani confirmed the incident and cautioned officers to ensure their guns are in safe mode when in the town centre.
