On Saturday evening, a tragic incident occurred at Kedong ranch in Naivasha, where Sergeant Ayub Polo was shot to death by Corporal Joseph Muthunga, a junior police officer.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer in charge had allowed the officers to leave by 6 pm, but Corporal Muthunga returned to the camp drunk around 10 pm, sparking a confrontation with Sergeant Polo.
Corporal Muthunga allegedly shot in the air three times before turning the gun on Sergeant Polo, who died on the spot. The suspect then turned to another officer, who managed to escape using the cover of darkness.
Police in Naivasha launched a major operation to recover the gun, which was hidden in a shallow trench at the Kedong ranch. The G3 rifle and 29 rounds of bullets were recovered on Sunday at around midnight.
Corporal Muthunga was arrested in Nakuru town on Sunday and later whisked to the scene where he had hidden the weapon. He is set to be charged in court today.
Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident, stating that the gun had been taken for ballistic analysis and the suspect would be charged in court.
