Kenyan Celebrities Who Came Out as LGBTQIA+ in 2021

Published on December 23, 2021

While societal norms in many African countries continue to stigmatize the LGBTQIA+ community, some Kenyan celebrities have found the courage to express their true selves, despite the potential backlash.

Among those who came out in 2021 were Makena Njeri, a former Tahidi High actress and BBC journalist, who openly confessed her gay identity and credited it with helping her understand herself better.

"I remember for the first time in my life after very many years looking at myself in the mirror and I said to myself, I am gay, I am unique and this is my truth," she said.

Other notable celebrities who came out in 2021 include Silas Miami, the son of veteran journalist Louis Otieno, who announced his marriage to a man on social media, and Noti Flow, a musician who revealed her bisexuality and expressed her support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

These individuals, along with Brenda Jons and Willis Chimano, have helped pave the way for greater acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community in Kenya.
