July 8, 2019 - BBC Business Editor for Africa Larry Madowo is taking a year-long sabbatical to pursue a prestigious journalism fellowship at Columbia University.

Madowo, who has been with the BBC for an undisclosed period, will be leaving his position as Business Editor for Africa to focus on his studies at the Columbia Journalism School in New York City.

According to his Twitter announcement, Madowo will be taking a break from the BBC to be a 'full-time student again' at Columbia University, where he has been selected for the 44th Knight-Bagehot fellowship in Business and Economics for the 2019-2020 academic year.

It is not clear whether Madowo will return to the BBC after completing his fellowship at Columbia University.

Reacting to the news, some of Madowo's fans took to Twitter to express their sentiments, with one fan asking if he could take Madowo's position, citing unemployment as a major concern, while another fan wished him well, saying 'son of the soil provided you are alive nothing can worry us.'

“Hard to believe that I’ve got just 3 weeks left with the BBC before taking a break to be a full-time student again at Columbia University. New York City, I’ll see you soon but for now, Nairobi, be nice to me,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.
