On July 8, 2019, Kenyan football fans woke up to the news of Allan Wanga's retirement from Harambee Stars after 12 years of service.
The move came in the backdrop of the African Cup of Nations snub, where Wanga was controversially omitted from the national team squad that took part in the tournament in Egypt.
Wanga, a widely travelled forward, has played in Kenya, Angola, Sudan, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, and Vietnam, winning several accolades in those countries.
Confirming his retirement from Harambee Stars, Wanga stated that he wants to focus on his career as the County Sports Director with Kakamega county government and his club.
"It's now time for me to pave way for other players who I believe will embody the spirit of Harambee as I trust I did," he said.
"I will now dedicate my time to my county Kakamega and my club. Thank you FKF, thank you Kenya for the decade plus of togetherness," he concluded.
Wanga's exit deals coach Sebastien Migne a huge blow as the team prepares for Chan qualifiers later this month.
His fans took to social media to send him messages of goodwill, with many expressing disbelief at the news.
