December 20, 2021, marked the beginning of a nationwide boycott by Catholic hospitals in Kenya against the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) over unpaid bills.

According to Mgr. Joseph Mbatia, the chairman of the Catholic Health Commission in Kenya, the hospitals have been left with no choice but to take drastic measures due to the delayed payments.

“We are forced to request payment for the drugs we purchase alongside other necessities when treating NHIF patients. Delayed payments severely affect our operations,” Mgr. Mbatia said.
