On a historic Sunday evening at the Kasarani Stadium, Kariobangi Sharks etched their names in the annals of Kenyan football by defeating English Premier League side Everton 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

Published on July 8, 2019, the match was a closely contested affair, with the two teams settling for a 1-1 draw at full time. Kariobangi Sharks' Duke Abuya gave the hosts the lead in the 27th minute, only for Everton's Joe Williams to equalize in the second half.

As the match went into a penalty shootout, Sharks' goalkeeper Brian Bwire proved to be the hero, saving two spot kicks and converting one to secure a thrilling victory for the Kenyan side.

The Kasarani Stadium was packed to capacity, with international stars like England's Theo Walcott in attendance. Despite being outmatched by the English Premier League side, Kariobangi Sharks showed no signs of intimidation, playing with a confidence that earned them a well-deserved win.

The victory marked a significant milestone for Kariobangi Sharks, who had won the 2019 edition of the SportPesa Cup in January. Their 1-0 win over Bandari in the final gave them regional supremacy and the opportunity to face Everton.

Everton's visit to East Africa marked their second trip to the region, following their 2-1 win over Gor Mahia in 2017. The Toffees had also faced Gor Mahia in 2018, when the Kenyan side traveled to Goodison Park in the UK.

Both Kariobangi Sharks and Everton were wearing their new season's kits for the first time, manufactured by renowned apparel makers Umbro.
