Published on July 8, 2019, a bus crash on India's Yamuna expressway resulted in the deaths of at least 29 people and injured 18 others.
The accident occurred early Monday morning when the double-decker bus, carrying around 50 people from New Delhi to Lucknow, hit a divider and fell into a gap between two flyovers on the Yamuna expressway.
According to police, the bus driver was suspected to have fallen asleep before the crash, which happened at around 4:15 am.
The bus fell over 12 meters (40 feet) into a river below the road, crushing the top deck and complicating rescue efforts due to the water.
Agra district magistrate N.G. Ravi Kumar stated at the scene of the accident, "Twenty nine persons have died and 18 others are injured."
The Yamuna expressway, which spans 165 kilometers (100 miles) from Delhi to Agra, is India's longest six-lane highway and has seen over 900 fatalities since its opening in 2012.
India's roads are notorious for poor infrastructure and speeding drivers, resulting in over 150,000 fatalities annually.
