The Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has initiated a Kshs. 6.4 billion Electrification of Public Facilities Project (EPFP) to bring electricity to public entities.
On December 15, 2021, the project was officially launched, marking a significant step towards achieving universal electricity coverage in Kenya.
The project aims to electrify 1,200 public facilities, including market centers, health centers, educational institutions, and administration centers, among others.
Divided into five lots, the project will cover various regions, including Nyanza and Western, North Rift, South Rift, Central, and Upper Eastern, Lower Eastern, and Coast regions.
Government of Kenya secured credit financing from Arab Development Partners to facilitate the project, which will be funded by the Government of Kenya, Arab Bank for Economic Development for Africa (BADEA), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma disclosed that the project is expected to be completed by June 2022, providing electricity to 35,460 households, translating to 7,000 households in each lot.
Completion of the project will have a significant impact on the socio-economic development of the country, as highlighted by Bura MP Ali Wario and Tana River women representative Rehema Hassan.
The chairman of the REREC board of directors, Prof Simon Gicharu, emphasized the Corporation's alignment with the national economic development blueprint, Vision 2030, and the Government's Big 4 initiative.
