Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is set to revolutionize the country's energy landscape by pumping an additional 83MW of geothermal power into the national grid by January 2022.
According to KenGen CEO Rebecca Miano, the company is at an advanced stage of constructing the Olkaria I unit 6, which is expected to be completed and added to the grid between now and early next year.
Speaking after a visit to Olkaria, Naivasha, Miano emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "We are at an advanced stage of construction of 83MW Olkaria I unit 6 and we expect this to be added to the grid between now and early next year."
The project is part of KenGen's plans to replace thermal power with green energy, with Miano expressing the company's commitment to delivering on its energy generation mandate to meet the country's growing demand for electricity through renewable energy.
KenGen is accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources such as hydro, geothermal, wind, and solar, with Miano stating, "KenGen is committed to ensuring a steady and reliable supply of competitively priced electric energy to support Kenya's economy."
Energy CS Monica Juma lauded KenGen for its global leadership in the field of renewable energy, as demonstrated during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Scotland.
She urged KenGen to ensure a reliable supply of power while underscoring the link between energy and dignity for humanity, adding that the Government had launched a campaign to ensure that all Kenyans use clean energy by 2028 to help conserve the environment.
Renewable energy is the preferred option for Kenya, Juma said, adding that this would also help attract foreign investments in Kenya's energy sector.
KenGen Chairman, General (rtd) Samson Mwathethe reiterated their commitment to clean energy deployment and thanked the government and development partners for their support in the delivery of power projects.
