On July 7, 2019, US President Donald Trump congratulated the US women's soccer team on their World Cup victory, saying the country is 'proud of you all.'
Trump took to Twitter to express his congratulations, saying, 'Congratulations to the U.S. Women's Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play.'
The US team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the final match, with Megan Rapinoe scoring a penalty and Rose Lavelle scoring a strike.
However, the team's victory was marred by controversy, as Rapinoe had previously vowed to stay home if Trump invited the team to Washington, citing her desire to protest the president's policies and character.
Trump responded to Rapinoe's comments, saying, 'Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team.'
Championship US sports teams are traditionally honored with an invitation to the White House, although Trump has at times revoked invitations after team members criticized him.
