As the city of Nairobi continues to grow, its residents are facing numerous challenges, including inadequate service delivery from the county government.
On July 7, 2019, the Business Daily published an editorial highlighting the need for the county government to prioritize service delivery over populist measures.
The editorial noted that despite numerous announcements about reviewing levies, Nairobi residents have seen little improvement in services such as water accessibility, road upgrades, and garbage clearance.
One such example is the proposed doubling of parking fees in the city centre, from Sh200 to Sh400, and the introduction of a new parking fee of Sh200 in residential areas.
The county government argues that this increase is necessary to reverse the drop in revenue collection and decongest the Central Business District.
However, residents are skeptical, given that a similar proposal was shot down by ward representatives last September and the fee was subsequently reduced to Sh200.
It is time for the county government to walk the talk and deliver on its promises to improve services for the residents of Nairobi.
