On July 7, 2019, the Long Beach-Mombasa Sister City program announced the appointment of Mishael Ondieki, a former Kenyan journalist, to its Board of Directors.
Ondieki, a California-based businessman, has invested in various US businesses, including real estate and software development.
As an advisor to the United States Africa Opportunity Network (USAFON), Ondieki is well-positioned to leverage his expertise in business and investing to drive the program's goals.
The Long Beach-Mombasa Sister City program is one of 17 Sister City Partnerships selected by Sister City International (SCI) to lead infrastructure building projects in Africa under the Africa Urban Poverty Alleviation Program (AUPAP).
Chairman Phyllis Vanable announced the appointment, which also includes Dr. Juma Bharadia, Mr. Art Nora of USAFON, Ms. Sara Mirza, and Ms. Mary Makau.
The board is working with the local economic development authority to hold a trade event in Long Beach later this year, aiming to drum up support and mobilize businesses and investors for a planned trade delegation to Mombasa in 2020.
Ms. Vanable emphasized that the new additions will give the board the impetus it needs ahead of the planned delegation, which will be led by Mayor of Long Beach Robert Garcia.
