On June 25, Florence Muthoni boarded a matatu heading to the city centre at the Kilimani bus stop. Little did she know, her life was about to take a devastating turn.
According to her uncle, John Chege, a stranger called the family to inform them that Muthoni had been picked up by the roadside in critical condition. They rushed to the scene and found her in a pool of blood, with a punctured brain and a broken skull.
Despite being rushed to St Francis Hospital and later to Kenyatta National Hospital, Muthoni's condition continued to deteriorate. She died three days after the incident, alongside her dreams of going back to school and taking up a better job.
The matatu conductor, who has since been arrested, initially denied assaulting Muthoni. However, police investigations revealed that she had boarded the vehicle and was attacked by the conductor.
Police have obtained CCTV footage of Muthoni boarding the vehicle, but are yet to trace three passengers who were in the same vehicle. The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many sharing their own horror stories of being physically assaulted by matatu touts.
As the police continue to investigate the incident, many are left wondering what drove the conductor to commit such a heinous crime.
