Manchester United is on the verge of securing a major coup with Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea set to agree a new £350,000 a week contract, according to recent talks between the Old Trafford hierarchy and De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes.

De Gea, 28, whose current £200,000 a week package has only 12 months to run, will put pen to paper on a five-year deal, making him the highest paid keeper in the world.

The deal comes after De Gea's original demand for pay parity with Alexis Sanchez, who earns around £500,000 a week, was not met, and he also considered a move to Real Madrid, but Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane has more pressing transfer targets.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be relieved to have De Gea on board as he battles to keep want-away Paul Pogba, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and his former club Juventus.

United kick off their pre-season tour in Australia on July 13, with Pogba's future at the club still uncertain.
