Published on July 7, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta made headlines when he suggested that his son Muhoho should consider marrying a Tanzanian woman.

During a visit to Tanzania, Uhuru made the comments while addressing a gathering at the home village of his host, the late President John Magufuli, in Chato.

Uhuru's remarks were made in a lighthearted tone, with him joking that his son should 'tembea tembea' (travel around) Tanzania to find a suitable wife.

Uhuru's visit to Tanzania was a private one, where he also visited Magufuli's ailing mother before addressing the gathering.

Magufuli, who was deeply touched by Uhuru's visit, gifted him four peacocks, which he said would be delivered to Kenya soon.

Uhuru's comments on marriage were made in a bid to strengthen the bond between Kenya and Tanzania, with him cautioning politicians against making statements that could breed regional animosity.

Uhuru's administration has been keen on promoting unity among East Africans, and his comments on marriage were seen as a way to foster greater understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
