On a visit to Tanzania, President Uhuru Kenyatta's unofficial trip turned into an overnight stay, following an impressive reception in northern Tanzania on July 5, 2019.

During his visit, Kenyatta and Tanzanian President John Magufuli showcased a warm and friendly relationship, despite recent trade wars between their countries.

Magufuli revealed that Kenyatta had requested to visit, and the Tanzanian president expressed his happiness at the impromptu visit.

"He planned to come then return but has decided to spend the night and I'm very happy," Magufuli said in a speech to residents.

Kenya's president reciprocated the warmth, joking about his son potentially finding a wife in Chato, Magufuli's hometown.

"Labda anaweza bahatika hata yeye" (Maybe he might also get lucky), Kenyatta joked, as Magufuli promised a warm welcome if that happened.

Kenya and Tanzania have been engaged in trade wars, with Kenya imposing tariffs on flour and other products from Tanzania in September 2018.

However, the two presidents appeared to downplay the economic tensions, with Magufuli stressing the importance of a strong East African bloc and cross-border trade.

"Tanzanians can go and invest in Kenya and get rich. In Tanzania, we have 30.5 million cows. And I know there is a big market for our cows in Kenya. Continue receiving them. That is business," Magufuli said.
