On July 6, 2019, during a private visit to Tanzania, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his host President John Magufuli reaffirmed their commitment to addressing cross-border crimes.
Speaking on the last day of President Kenyatta's two-day visit, the two leaders emphasized that citizens of either country would be subject to the laws of the country where they commit a crime.
President Magufuli stated, 'If a person (Tanzanian) commits a crime in Kenya, they will be subjected to Kenyan law. And if a Kenyan commits a crime in Tanzania, they will be dealt with in accordance with our laws.'
The two leaders aimed to instill discipline and facilitate business activities between the two countries, with President Magufuli noting that Tanzania holds 57 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and is looking to export to international markets, including Kenya.
President Kenyatta emphasized the need to protect peace-loving East Africans from the actions of a few misguided individuals, particularly those engaged in terrorist activities.
The two leaders also agreed to establish a natural gas trade arrangement between the neighboring countries and revamp ferry services on Lake Victoria to enhance connectivity and spur economic activities.
