Published on July 7, 2019, Stevia is a sugar substitute made from the leaves of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant. Native to Brazil and Paraguay, Stevia has been used for centuries as a natural sweetener and treatment for various health issues.

At maturity, Stevia leaves are dried to remove moisture and then ground into powder. This natural sweetener is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar but has zero calories and a low glycemic index.

Stevia is known to help control blood sugar and insulin levels, making it a popular choice for those with diabetes or metabolic syndrome. It is also said to fight cavities, strengthen bones, and lower blood pressure.

When baking, Stevia can be used as a substitute for sugar. In place of a cup of sugar, you would need just one teaspoon of liquid Stevia or half a teaspoon of Stevia powder. Stevia is available in supermarkets and health shops for around Sh1,000 or more per 150g of 100 per cent pure Stevia.
