July 7, 2019 - Egyptian Football Association (EFA) President Hani Abou Rida resigned on Saturday, following the team's shocking elimination from the African Cup of Nations.

Abou Rida's decision was described as a 'moral obligation' by the EFA, which also invited all board members to resign after the team's 1-0 defeat to South Africa.

The defeat marked a disappointing end to Egypt's campaign, which was expected to be a strong contender for the title. The team's line-up included Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, who was among the favourites to win the tournament.

Abou Rida had led the EFA since 2016, a tenure marked by controversy, including a 2018 World Cup fiasco and criticism over the team's training base in Grozny, Chechnya.

The EFA has also faced criticism from human rights groups and from star player Mohamed Salah, who accused the body of misusing his image in the country.

Coach Javier Aguirre took the blame for the team's disastrous campaign, indicating he would hold talks with the EFA over his future.

Thembinkosi Lorch scored the only goal of the last-16 match in the 85th minute, giving South Africa a stunning victory.
