Published on July 7, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta's private visit to Tanzania is a significant step towards forging closer political and economic ties between the two countries.

The visit comes at a time when trade restrictions have been a point of contention, with accusations and counter-accusations between the two nations. The arrest and charging of a Kenyan MP over xenophobic remarks against Tanzania traders in Nairobi is a recent example of the simmering tensions.

However, the visit by President Kenyatta is a positive development, as it demonstrates the commitment of top leaders to resolving outstanding issues. The personal rapport between President Kenyatta and his Tanzanian counterpart, John Magufuli, is crucial in resolving any outstanding issues.

According to President Magufuli, Tanzania is an important source of wealth for Kenya, with 504 Kenyan companies valued at Sh174 billion operating in the country. In contrast, only 24 Tanzanian firms worth Sh20 billion are operating in Kenya. Tanzania is also a major source market for tourists, accounting for 10% of the over two million visitors to Kenya last year.

Trade officials held bilateral meetings in Arusha in April to address some of the contentious issues, including the rules of origin for some products and the quality of goods. It is essential that those prone to making wild statements that can strain relations are made to realize the importance of cooperation in the East African region.
