Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has opened five roads in Nairobi, bringing relief to commuters who had been facing massive traffic along the route. The roads were closed as part of the ongoing Nairobi Expressway construction project.
According to a statement released on November 24, 2021, the entire project is 75 percent complete, with the full opening slated for June 2022. The statement noted that since the construction kicked off in 2020, over 4,000 Kenyans have secured employment, and tonnes of construction materials have been procured.
Some of the opened roads include Mlolongo Weighbridge to KAPA Oil Industries, Gateway Mall to Hilton Gardens, and Sameer Park connected to Southern Bypass. Other routes that have been opened include David Osielli Road through to Aga Khan School and Museum Hill access road, which allows motorists to connect to Thika Superhighway from Waiyaki Way.
The elevated section of the road stands at 92.6 percent completion rate, with two roads expected to be opened in December. These are Haille Selassie to University Way Roundabout and Gateway Mall area, which will be opened by December 15.
Motorists are advised to take note of five spots along the 25km stretch that are likely to experience traffic jams due to ongoing construction. These include the u-turn from Allpack service road, the area around Gateway Mall, General Motors (GM) area, Capital Center, and Bunyala Road Roundabout.
The entire project is valued at Ksh65 billion.
