On November 24, 2021, Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Rashid Aman commissioned medical equipment at the Spinal Injury Referral Hospital in Kenya.
Speaking during the commissioning, Aman emphasized the importance of the donated equipment, saying it would significantly improve spinal care and reduce hospital stays for patients.
“For those of you who may not be aware, Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) are very devastating, if not fatal,” said Aman, highlighting the physical and mental challenges faced by victims.
The CAS commended the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) for donating three patients’ monitors and four orthopedic beds, which he said would go a long way in improving spinal care.
Aman noted that the facility had been in existence since 1944 and had taken care of war veterans and the general public, adding that it had grown into a public institution under the Ministry of Health.
He expressed the government's intention to have the facility grow into a centre of excellence in Africa, with the support of partners and stakeholders such as the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), National Transport and Safety Agency (NTSA), and the National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD).
Aman assured the staff that the government would support them with the necessary infrastructure and equipment.
He appealed to all Kenyans to take extra precautions to guard themselves against any injuries, particularly those that could affect their spinal cords.
