Deputy President William Ruto faced a chaotic scene in Migori County on July 6, 2019, as a group of around 300 drunk youths surrounded his car and heckled speakers at an event in Kehancha town.
The youths, who were allegedly under the influence of illicit brew, disrupted the launch of several development projects, including the Sh2.8 billion Kehancha-Lolgorian Road.
With the absence of Provincial Administration officers, Ruto had no option but to proceed with his speech, which was later taken over by Kuria East MP Marwa Kitamaya after Kuria West MP Mathius Robi was heckled.
"If you don't want to listen to us then it is better you leave. The development projects we have come to launch here today are for the benefit of our youth and can't afford to have the same people heckle leaders," Ruto told the intoxicated youths.
He also clarified that the street lighting programme being launched across the country was meant to boost the economy, not to provide enough lighting for drunkards to loiter in shopping centres.
