On July 6, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto visited Kehancha town in Migori County to launch several development projects, including the Sh2.8 billion Kehancha-Lolgorian Road.
However, the event was marred by chaos as a group of about 300 drunk youths surrounded Ruto's car, heckling speakers and disrupting the proceedings.
With the absence of Provincial Administration officers, Ruto was left to navigate the situation, which saw Kuria West MP Mathius Robi forced to cut short his speech and hand over the microphone to Kuria East MP Fred Chacha.
"If you don't want to listen to us then it is better you leave. The development projects we have come to launch here today are for the benefit of our youth and can't afford to have the same people heckle leaders," Ruto told the intoxicated youths.
He also used the opportunity to address the issue of illicit brews in the country, saying that the street lighting programme being launched across the country was meant to boost the economy, not to provide enough lighting for drunkards to loiter in shopping centres.
